Modern kitchen layout with custom island in Philadelphia by Showcase Remodels

A Custom Kitchen Island Built for Your Philadelphia Home

A kitchen island gives you more counter space, more storage, and a place for family to sit while you cook. The right island can change how your whole kitchen works.

Showcase Remodels has been a licensed general contractor since 2002. We design and install kitchen islands across Center City, Fishtown, South Philly, and Northeast Philly. Every island we build is part of our full kitchen remodeling service.

We handle plumbing, electrical, cabinetry, countertops, and finish carpentry in-house. One crew, one schedule, one point of contact from demo to final walk-through. Call 215-515-6484 to schedule a free in-home consultation.

Most of our island work runs alongside a full kitchen update, but we also build stand-alone islands when the layout and budget call for it. We can match the new cabinets to your existing kitchen or refinish the whole run for a clean look.

Waterfall Edges and Countertop Choices for Island Tops

The island top is the part you see and touch every day. We help you pick a stone that fits your design and your daily routine.

Quartz

Engineered quartz is the top pick for most of our island jobs. It does not stain, it does not need sealing, and the colors are consistent slab to slab. Good for busy family kitchens.

Granite

Natural granite gives you one-of-a-kind veining. It needs a sealer once a year but it handles heat from a hot pan better than quartz. Good for cooks who like natural stone.

Quartzite

Quartzite looks like marble but is harder and more stain-resistant. It costs more than quartz but holds up better near a busy cooktop.

Waterfall Edge

A waterfall edge runs the stone down the side of the island to the floor. It gives the island a furniture look. We mitre the seams at 45 degrees so the veining flows around the corner.

Smart Storage and Prep Zones Inside Your Island

An island is not just a slab on legs. The base cabinets do most of the work. We plan storage around how you actually use the kitchen.

We swap base cabinet doors for deep drawers wherever we can. Drawers hold pots, lids, and small appliances better than shelves, and you do not have to crouch to reach the back.

A double pull-out for trash and recycling keeps the bins off the floor and out of sight. Philadelphia’s recycling rules need two streams, so we plan space for both.

Putting the microwave or a small fridge in the island frees up upper cabinet space and keeps drinks within reach for guests at the seating side.

We can build a butcher block insert into the countertop or a knife drawer right under the prep zone. Small details that make daily cooking easier.

How We Size a Kitchen Island for a Philadelphia Row Home

Sizing the island is the first step. Many Philadelphia row homes have narrow galley kitchens, so the island has to earn its space. We measure clearances on every side before we draw the plan.

Walkway Clearance

We leave 42 inches of open floor between the island and the nearest cabinet run for a single cook. For two cooks or a busy family kitchen, we push that to 48 inches so traffic flows.

Seating Overhang

A seating overhang needs 12 to 15 inches of countertop past the cabinet face. We add corbels or steel brackets when the overhang is more than 12 inches so the stone does not crack.

Counter Height vs Bar Height

Counter-height seating sits at 36 inches and uses 24-inch stools. Bar-height seating sits at 42 inches and uses 30-inch stools. We pick the height based on how you want the island to feel.

Plan for at least 42 inches of clear floor space on every side of the island. For two cooks or a family kitchen, 48 inches works better. Many Philadelphia row-home kitchens are tight, so we measure carefully before we draw the plan.

Yes. We run new water, drain, and electrical lines through the floor when there is a basement below, or through a small floor chase on slab homes. We pull L&I permits and coordinate with licensed trades for every install.
